SPECIAL RULES This Contest will be governed by the General Rules and Regulations of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, General Rules and Regulations for Competitions and Contests and, in addition, the following Special Rules. Please note Rule 1, Page 213 which will be strictly enforced. 1. An undergraduate student of a senior college or university which offers a four-year curriculum prerequisite to a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science may enter. Contestants must have been in attendance as regularly enrolled students in the institution they represent and may not have been away from the institution more than one (1) year at a time after first entering said institution, with the exception of service time in the Armed Forces. Contestants must not have served in the capacity of an Animal Science instructor in any agricultural college, nor may they have served as an official instructor, Extension Agent, Vocational Agriculture Teacher, official representative of a breed association, or as a wool judge in a state, regional, or national show. Applications for entry must be signed by the team coach certifying that all contestants are eligible. Contestants entering this Contest will not be eligible to enter future wool judging contests at this show. The Stock Show reserves the right to select entries based on the curriculum offered by the respective colleges. 2. Each college or university may enter two (2) teams, as well as additional individual contestants, provided the required entry application and entry fees are received by the established entry deadline. 3. Four (4) contestants shall constitute a team in this Contest and the highest three (3) contestants will determine the team’s score. The contestants representing the team will be declared by the team coach prior to the start of the Contest. Additional individual contestants are eligible to compete provided the required entry application and entry fees are received by the entry deadline of December 1, 2026. 4. Only contestants declared as team members will compete for and be eligible for team awards. All contestants (team members and individuals) are eligible for individual awards. Contestants will provide their own #2 pencil to mark placings on the scan sheets provided. 5. Six (6) classes of fleeces will be judged, and three (3) sets of oral reasons will be given. Fifty (50) points shall constitute a perfect score for placings, and fifty (50) points shall constitute a perfect score for reasons. Classes will include breeding and commercial fleeces evaluated on the basis of weight, staple length, grade, yield, fiber strength, and breed characteristics, as applicable. In addition, a class of twenty (20) fleeces will be evaluated for grade, spinning count, length, character, purity, and yield. Scores will be based on fleece evaluation, class placings and reasons. A total of three hundred (300) points will be allotted to fleece evaluation, three hundred (300) points to placings and one hundred and fifty (150) points to reasons. 6. On each class of fleeces, contestants will be allowed fifteen (15) minutes to make their observations, record their placings and take such notes to will assist them in remembering the class when they appear before the judge. Contestants will be given forty-five (45) minutes for scoring the class of twenty (20) fleeces. Each contestant will be allowed two and one-half (2 1/2) minutes per fleece and seven and one-half (7 1/2) minutes to reexamine. All groups will be notified two (2) minutes before the expiration of time. When final time is called, groups will change to other classes as directed by the superintendent. 7. After placing all classes in the Contest, the contestants will appear individually before a judge to give oral reasons substantiating their placings on three (3) designated classes. Each contestant will be allowed two (2) minutes to give reasons on each class. No contestant will be allowed to hold any paper or device of any kind that will assist in stating reasons to the judge. Tiebreakers - Overall: (1) fleece evaluation; (2) reasons; (3) placing and reasons - Reasons: (1) overall; (2) fleece evaluation; (3) placings - Placing: (1) overall; (2) fleece evaluation; (3) reasons - Placing and reasons: (1) fleece evaluation; (2) overall; (3) reasons Final results of the Contest will be made available and awards will be presented following the Contest. Awards will be presented to the appropriate teams and individuals following the contest. No duplicate awards will be given.
