SPECIAL RULES This Contest will be governed by the General Rules and Regulations of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, General Rules and Regulations for Judging Contests and, in addition, the following Special Rules. Contest entry applications may be obtained by contacting the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, PO Box 150, Fort Worth, Texas 76101-0150, 817-877-2400, or on our website fwssr.com. 1. ELIGIBILITY: a. Contestants must be bona fide 4-H or FFA members trained under the supervision of their respective Agricultural Science Teacher or County Extension Agent and enrolled in public or private schools in the State of Texas. 4-H contestants must reside in the county they are competing under, and FFA contestants must be listed on the active roster of their chapter. b. Each County Extension Agent or Agricultural Science Teacher may enter up to two (2) teams for both Junior and Senior Divisions and any number of individuals in the Contest. All contestants must be nine (9) years old or in the third grade, but not older than twenty (20) years old on January 1, 2025. c. Junior Division will include individuals from age nine (9) years old (or entered in the third grade) through high school freshman. d. Senior Division will include individuals at high school sophomore level through senior, maximum age twenty (20). 2. Competing teams may consist of three (3) members and one (1) alternate. The high three (3) scores will be the team score. 3. The team coach must submit an entry application no later than December 1, 2024. 4. Plants for the Contest will be selected from the Master Plant List. The Master Plant List includes range and pasture plants that are adapted to Texas conditions. The plant identification contests are sponsored jointly by the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Agriculture Science and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Additional lists can be obtained from the Extension Range Specialists’ Office, 2138 TAMU, College Station, Texas 77843-2138. 5. Contestants will be given a scan sheet and plant number code list. Contestants will have sixty (60) seconds to identify the plant and check the characteristics of each of the plants in the Contest. Scoring will be by points. If the plant name is incorrect, no credit will be given for characteristics correctly identified. Plant samples used in the Contest may be mounted or live specimens. Each participant should bring a legal size clipboard and two (2) pencils and may have a small magnifying glass with or without a light during the Contest. No other materials will be allowed in the contest area. 6. In the event of ties, the judges will decide who shall receive the award.
