SPECIAL RULES This Contest will be governed by the General Rules and Regulations of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, General Rules and Regulations for Judging Contests and, in addition, the following Special Rules. Please note Rule 1, Page 223 which will be strictly enforced. 1. An undergraduate student of a senior college which offers a four-year curriculum prerequisite to a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science may enter. Contestants must never have taken part in any college student’s senior livestock judging contest of interstate or international character prior to the calendar year in which this Contest is held. Contestants must have been in attendance as a regularly enrolled student in the institution they represent and may not have been away from the institution more than one (1) year at a time after first entering said institution, with the exception of service time in the Armed Forces. Contestants must not have served in the capacity of animal science instructor in any agricultural college. The Management reserves the right to select entries based on the curriculum offered by the respective colleges. 2. Each college may enter only one (1) team, as well as additional individual contestants; however, a college may not enter both Junior and Senior Livestock Judging Contest. 3. Six (6) contestants shall constitute a team in this Contest and the highest five (5) contestants will determine the team’s score. The contestants representing the team will be declared by the team coach at the Coaches Meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Additional individual contestants are eligible to compete provided the required entry application and entry fees are received by the entry deadline of December 1, 2024. 4. Only contestants declared as team members will compete for and be eligible for team awards. All contestants (team members and individuals) are eligible for individual awards. Contestants will provide their own #2 pencil to mark placings on scan sheets. 5. Twelve (12) classes will be judged, and eight (8) sets of oral reasons given. Fifty (50) points shall constitute a perfect mark for placings, and fifty (50) points a perfect mark for reasons or questions. 6. On each class of livestock, contestants will be allowed fifteen (15) minutes to make their observations, record their placings and take such notes as will assist them in remembering the class when they appear before the judge. All groups will be notified two (2) minutes before the time is up. When final time is called, groups will change to other classes as directed by the Superintendent. 7. After placing all classes in the contest, the contestants will appear individually before a judge to give oral reasons substantiating their placings on certain classes. Each contestant will be allowed two (2) minutes to give reasons on each class. No contestant will be allowed to hold any paper or device of any kind that will assist in stating reasons to the judge. In case of ties, the individual or team winner shall be determined by: (1) High reasons score in species in which tie occurs. (2) High reasons score in the overall contest. (3) A coin toss between individuals or teams tied. (4) Ties for high reasons awards will be broken and awarded to high placing score in overall contest. No duplicate awards will be given.
